Honoring the history of racing in Nevada County and all those who dedicated their lives to it!

Empire Mine Speedway is a memorial to the lost and now re- imagined sport of dirt racing in Nevada County. The first race track ever built in Nevada County dates back to the mid 1800's where the gold miners, who were employed at Empire Mine and their families would gather on the weekends for excitement, entertainment and connection. The Glenbrooke Raceway was not only an integral part of local racing history, but it was also reported to be the first electrically lighted racetrack in the United States.

.

In the mid 90's after many years of racing, The Ernie Purssell Raceway located where the Nevada County Fair Arena is positioned, was demolished, leaving racing in the community completely void. This brought a lot of sadness to the community and took away a place where families and kids could gather safely, and if not already, possibly be inspired by the sport.

Current Day. The husband and wife team of Patrick and Kathryn Weger accomplished what was once thought to be impossible by erecting a temporary racetrack in the  Fairground's Arena and achieving the historic return of racing to Nevada County with their 2019 Vintage Duels Event featuring the Dwarf Class.

With the painstaking support of The Nevada County Fairgrounds, sponsors, volunteers, family and friends, it was truly a community effort that has made this dream possible!

Now, in 2022 with the creation of Empire Mine Speedway and a seasonal track with multiple races, hope is restored for the future of racing in Nevada County.

This vision is more than just racing. The Weger's believe it can benefit children and the community in far reaching ways with continued support.

Come along on this journey and let's all watch this Speedway grow into a positive new page in history!
